More massive wildfires have hit the Southern California region this week.

The Gifford fire was reported to have burned 100,000 acres in San Luis Opisbo County, with more than 870 remote homes and other structures are reported to be threatened. The Canyon brush fire grew to an estimated 5,000 acres within hours on Thursday (August 7), Ventura County Fire Department spokesperson Andrew Dowd confirmed via the Los Angeles Times.

“We’re trying to build a box around this fire and put it out before it gets into any of the potential communities that are currently under evacuation orders,” Dowd said.

The wildfires broke out after several days of intense heat in the Southern California region, with the Canyon Fire reported amid 100-degree temperatures. Temperatures are expected to decrease by 1 to 3 degrees this weekend with a slight weakening of the high pressure system and an increase in onshore flow, however, warmer valleys are still expected to reach 100 degrees.

Southern California is then expected to see warmer temperatures again on Monday (August 11), which will likely be similar to Thursday's weather.

“Although a few degrees of cooling is expected through the weekend, a very warm air mass will remain in place. An onshore flow regime will keep temperatures from exceeding record levels, but temperatures are expected remain above seasonal normals as high pressure aloft lingers over the Southwestern United States,” the weather service said on Friday (August 8) via the Los Angeles Times.
